Andreas Brantelid, Cello

Biography

Andreas Brantelid, born in 1987, is one of Scandinavia's leading cellists of his generation. He is the first Scandinavian to win 1st Prize in the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition (2006) and in the Paulo International Cello Competition (2007). In addition he has won a number of local competitions in Denmark and Sweden. He is elected "Rising Star" by European Concert Hall Organization in 2008, and he will give recitals in major prestigious halls all over Europe; Brussels, Salzburg, Birmingham, Vienna, Köln, Luxembourg, Stockholm and Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. Andreas Brantelid was Danish Radio's "Artist in Residence, 2007".

Andreas Brantelid can look forward to two very exciting collaborations in the coming seasons. From autumn 2008 until 2010 he will be BBC New Generation Artist and from 2009 until 2012 he is chosen as member of the Lincoln Centre Chamber Music Society, New York.

Andreas Brantelid made his solo debut with orchestra at the age of 14 with the Royal Danish Orchestra, Copenhagen, playing Elgar Cello Concerto. Since then he has appeared as soloist with the majority of orchestras all over Scandinavia. His debut with the Stockholm Philharmonic was a tremendous success, and he was immediately reinvited for the two following seasons. Future engagements with orchestras in Malmö and Helsingborg, Sweden the Finnish Radio Orchestra. Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra and Lahti Symphony Orchestra in Finland and the Royal Orchestra, Copenhagen.

In the summer of 2002 he formed a duo with Swedish pianist Bengt Forsberg, and they tour extensively with recitals yearly.

Andreas Brantelid is a favoured guest in the important festivals; Risør and Bergen, Norway, and Kuhmo Festival, Finland. In 2008 he has appeared in several Danish and Swedish festivals. As student at the Kronberg Academy, he will also perform with Gidon Kremer and Juri Bashmet a.o. Andreas Brantelid made a very successful debut in Wigmore Hall, London in June 2008.

A CD with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Schønwandt was released in April 2008 on the EMI label. The recording features Tchaikovsky: Rococo Variations, Schumann concerto and Saint-Saëns Concerto no. 1. Light pieces for cello and piano with Bengt Forsberg is recorded and will likewise be released shortly, also on the EMI label.

Andreas Brantelid has received a number of grants and prizes; The Jacob Gade Grant, Victor Borge Music Award, Léonie Sonning Music Grant and Queen Ingrid Honorary Grant. He is a scholarship holder of the BB Trust 2008.

He was given his first cello at the age of four, has studied with Henrik Brendstrup, Mats Rondin, Torleif Thedéen and at present with Frans Helmersson at the Kronberg Academy. In addition he has participated in master classes with Pieter Wispelwey, David Geringas and Ralph Kirshbaum a.o.

Andreas Brantelid plays a 1690 Giovanni Grancino cello, generously sponsored by the Augustinus Foundation.
